Department of History
The Department was established in 1922 und offers MA. MPhil, PhD programmes. The Department has the status of a Centre of Advanced Study. It has received funding from the UGC under the SAP/CAS schemes, and was given CAS II Status in 2016.
The Faculty strength is 38. Members of the Faculty arc recognized nationally and internationally in their specialized fields which include Indian history of various periods as well as global history. Their research papers, which represent cutting-edge research, have been published in leading peer-reviewed journals and their books have been published by leading publishers.
The research thrust areas of the Department are as follows: Rural and Urban Landscapes: Historical Perspectives; Textual Studies: Culture, Caste and Gender; Identity formation and articulation in India, Intellectual History, History of Science and Medicine; Asian interactions,Epigraphy and Historical Analysis of Inscriptions; Archacological Foundations of History.
The Department hosts a vibrant weekly seminar series, organizes conferences and reseearch scholars' workshops.
The Department has a Department Library and a Computer Laboratory. It also has a Museum of Art and Archaeology on the ground floor of the Faculty of Social Sciences building.
