Department of East Asian Studies
The Department of East Asian Studies began in 1964 as the Centre of Chinese Studies. The Centre grew into the Department of Chinese and Japanese Studies in 1969 and became the Department of East Asian Studies in 2001. The Department offers three post graduate courses: an MA in East Asian Studies, an MA in Japanese Language and Literature and an M. Phil and PhD in East Asian Studies. The post graduate courses in the Depariment focus on an inter-disciplinary approach to the study of the region. Research students in the Department are required to learn one of the three East Asian languages. The Department also offers full time and part time language courses in Chinese, Japanese and Korean which are open to students in its degrees as well as to students in other courses of study and those who wish to pursue the study of an East Asian Language.
